sad song Saturday
Fiona has some songs that are necessary for feeling properly sad.
“I KNOW”. Here’s one VERSION, which unfortunately has a little edit, but it’s still awesome; and here’s another live at the beautiful old LARGO. This song literally gives me the chills. Not figuratively. I’m not just saying that to impress upon you that it’s amazing. I get a little ghosty chill in my actual body when I hear it.
“PARTING GIFT”. “It ended bad, but I love where we started.” This is how I try to remember all of them. I mean, I try to try.
“WHAT’LL I DO?” What will I do? I don’t know…hmm.. Usually what I will do whenever I hear this song is want to cry in a profound way over every person I’ve ever loved and lost, as if it just happened yesterday. Not even in the morning yesterday. Even more recently than that. Just last night yesterday. There are so many famous versions of this tune, but Harry Nilsson’s is really, really sad. Don’t let the grand orchestral stuff shake you from appreciating the complete despair of Harry’s voice. It’s some really excellent despair. And I think that the lyrics to this song are pretty much first place in the sad breakup lyrics contest. Oh, Irving Berlin. You’re really very talented.

I’d like even more breakup songs. I’m finding them extremely helpful in a really masochistic kind of way. I’d really appreciate any futher suggestions. I’m going through a bad, bad breakup, with the ex, who is posting his every move (including sexual, classy huh?) with the new goth girlfriend on facebook. Your other suggestions were fantastic. I love Fiona. By the way, I was there at Central Park when you performed your monologue about your breakup. I still remember it, it was fantastic and truly inspiring. By the way, have you been in touch with your ex since?

If you are looking for sad songs it is hard to beat the legend that is Townes Van Zandt. I recommend “Highway Kind” for a sad song about love and trying to find it. Then “Marie” and “A Song For” for just make you want to cry and hug someone songs. Also I really enjoyed your Moth story “Breaking up in the age of google” Super funny.

Don’t be sad, Ms. Klein! I just watched your Comedy Central special and it was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. So funny, in fact, that I’ve spent most of my Friday evening alone Youtubing you. It’s not as creepy as it sounds though, I’m too boring and nerdy to go get drunk all the other fun people in my complex, so unless I was hanging out with my other cool roommates (a libritarian, a lesbian and a trombonist), I’d probably be doing something else equally lethargic and mopey. Wait, I suppose that isn’t a lot better, is it?
Alas, in my perilous journey though the annals of the internet, I found that your heart belongs to another. A Gergen I could never compete with. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but I know that even were I to learn magic, lose my hair, make friends with Michelle Obama and suddenly have good posture, I still couldn’t dream of looking so super-cute and spud-like. While I know that you could never betray the monolith of a man whom you’ve dedicated yourself to, you must know that my heart will always throb for a woman as beautiful as yourself
Your (for the time being) Herpes-free fan,
Taylor

The only way to differentiate yourself from the competition is through service.
